Room Details

Few women are more closely associated with the women’s suffrage movement in the United States than Susan B. Anthony. A participant in social reform activities from an early age, Anthony was an advocate of anti-slavery and a pioneer crusader for women’s rights. Along with friend and suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Anthony founded the National American Woman Suffrage Association, for which she served as president from 1892 - 1900. Her tireless efforts helped pave the way for the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution (passed in 1920, 14 years after her death) and Anthony became the first woman to have her portrait placed on U.S. currency (the one dollar coin) by the U.S. Treasury Department in 1979.
